"I don't think Michael would be embarrassed," she said.
"Would you?" Jim asked.
"It's not like we don't all know what's going on," she said.
Joe nodded. "All right, I'll just take my chances."
Michael came home late. Linda held supper for him and she and Jim were
at the table. He came in with dirt all over his face and arms and his
clothes were dirty.
"My Lord, what happened to you?" she asked.
"I got a job and they said I could start right away," he replied, with a
subtle glance at Joe. "So I'll start paying rent right away."
"That's wonderful," Linda said.
"Yeah, that's great," Joe said.
"Well, I need to shower, as you can see....if that's all right."
"Don't be long, we've held supper for you," Linda said.
Joe sat at the kitchen table staring out the window while Linda started
putting supper on the table.
"Joe......?"
"I'm just trying to let this all soak in," he said.
"Yes, so am I."
